“A sports fan will always spot a fraud!” – An interview with Sky Sports News presenter Rob Wotton

He is one of those friendly faces that you see reporting the news on one of the world’s best sporting news programmes.

Having been apart of the Sky Sports News team since they were first broadcast 20 years ago, Rob Wotton has become a permanent fixture on our television screens, bringing us the latest news, updates and interviews of the day in such a wholesome and regulated fashion.

Naturally, Rob went through the same pain as the majority of civilisation, when he discovered that his sporting talents had harsh limitations.

“I always loved sport (especially football). I, like many youngsters, dreamed of being a footballer. This was the next best thing!”

Rob further explained how the attraction of sport defined his life and how his outlook has been affected ever since.

“It encompasses all that is good (and bad) in life. Competition, loyalty (from the fans at least), a sense of belonging and a feeling of mutual understanding and bonding”

Having discovered that working in the sporting media was his ambition, Rob made an effort to take those first steps into the industry, which led him to working for well-respected football commentator Jonathan Pearce.

“I was offered a job at Capital Radio having done my work experience there. It was such a lucky break. I started as a news and sports journalist before turning solely to sport

“Jonathan Pearce. He was my mentor, boss and most importantly my friend at Capital. I learnt so much from him”

Upon stepping into the media world, Rob was given advice that he still heeds to this day.

“If you’re going to work in sport you’ve got to not just know your sport, but you’ve got to feel your sport. A sports fan will always spot a fraud!”

Having progressed through the ranks and landed his dream job with Sky Sports News, Rob has been both privileged and professional enough to work among some of the finest sports broadcasters in the country. That isn’t to say Rob doesn’t like to have fun whilst busy at work. You merely have to type in ‘Rob Wotton funny’ on YouTube to see a vast array of clips showing Rob at his entertaining best!

When asked how he ensures that he stands out from the crowd, he merely states, “I don’t know! I’ve always tried to just be myself!”

Now in 2018, the way sport, in particular, football, is broadcast to the world is forever changing at a rapidly enticing pace. The relationship between the living room, the sofa and the television set is becoming increasingly strained as streaming activity across the internet is persuading a new generation of sports fans to view entertainment from a different perspective.

“I think watching TV as we know it will soon be a thing of the past,” says Rob.

“The internet and live streaming will see the end of people sitting down to watch a programme. Live sport will soon become one of the few set-piece events that brings people together.”

Where Sky Sports target market views their chosen entertainment shouldn’t impact on Rob’s abilities to continue providing a service to the sporting community. Having such a prominent career over a prolonged period of time has seen Rob become one of Sky Sports News’ most recognisable faces.

And his advice for you? Quite simple, work hard and good things happen.

“Be prepared to work hard, start at the bottom and don’t expect it to be handed to you on a plate or to happen overnight.”
